Entrelac is a knitting technique that creates a very interesting, complicated look, however, it is only connecting squares while you knit and is really not that difficult. These knitting e-patterns are designed by Suzanne Pufpaff of the Yurt Boutique, part of Pufpaff's Fiber Processing.

Entrelac Triangle Shawl is $5.00

Entrelac Triangle Shawl with Lace Patterns Inserted in Rectangles. Suzanne starts with one square instead of a triangle base row. This makes it easy to use various size yarns and size of shawl.

.The shawl pictured used 16 ounces of hand spun 2 ply fingering weight yarn with US size 6 needles and a gauge of 5 sts to the inch and 6 rows to the inch. Gauge is not really important for this project. It is more important to match needle size to yarn size to make a light flexible fabric. Since Entrelac creates a bias fabric, this also effects finished size more than the gauge.

The finished size of this shawl is 44 inches on short edge and 72 inches on long edge. If a larger shawl is desired, lace pattern rows can be repeated with addition repeats of the pattern squares in the center of the shawl. Again the bias effect of the entrelac makes for a shawl that drapes easily on the body.

Entrelac Butterfly Shawl, the entrelac variation used in this shawl combines increasing the number of stitches in the rectangles in each row and making alternate rows of rectangles in reverse Stockinette stitch. By using alternate rows of reverse Stockinette, the shawl is completely reversible and either end can be the top.
This sample used 24 ounces of hand spun 2 ply DK weight yarn. Larger and smaller yarns can be used. Finer yarn will need less ounces.

Gauge is 4 sts to the inch and 5 rows to the inch. Gauge is not real important for this project. It is more important to match needle size to yarn size to make a light flexible fabric. Since Entrelac creates a bias fabric, this also effects finished size more than the gauge.

Entrelac Shrug

Entrelac Shrug is a variation of the entrelac technique with a lace design inserted into alternating rows of squares and is knit side to side, rather cuff to cuff.

The shrug pictured was made from 6 ounces of lace weight handspun merino wool and angora yarn. The cuff was knit with US size 2 double point needles to make it tight. The body was knit with US size 3 single point or circular needles. Gauge is 6 stitches per inch and 10 rows per inch.
